| After about 8 months of forgetting about it, and only around 5 minutes to find it, I decided to pay a visit to Grand Cane School, in Grand Cane, Louisiana. A friend just happened to mention this place to me awhile back, which I sort of forgot about due to the abundance of left-behind schools in the area. At first, I thought he may have been mistaken, since there are and used to be schools in Keatchie and Mansfield. The only thing there is to the school is a breezeway and one building. From the entry driveway there is a circle drive, which is really grown over, and I'm also assuming the driveway extends all the way to the back of the school. The structure of the school is what really stumps me. Assuming there used to be more buildings, the only one left seems to be a large cafeteria. Even then, a cafeteria is questionable. If I'm remembering correctly, there are 2 rolling gates on the right side and at the back of the building, probably for deliveries. At the back of the school where one of the rolling gates used to be, there seemed to be maybe the playground or playing field of some sort, since it was all grown up but not a lot of wild trees and shrubs. There were also several long spots that looked as if there used to be lockers there. The roof is pretty much gone which made it pretty wet inside while I was in there, but it was hard to tell if it was from vandalism or just old age. Attached to the cafeteria is the breezeway, which winds around to the left of the school and ends into nothing. There possibly could have been another building attached but the growth was so thick, that I couldn't see any sign of a foundation. All in all, this wasn't much of a school at all. With such a small building and this not being the best part of Grand Cane, It's really not worth the risk of leaving your vehicle, since I was approached by some "concerned" neighbors. Another thing is I do not know anything about this school, like the name, when it closed or opened, and the reason it closed. If anyone knows anything about this school please feel free to e-mail me at jonathon@hauntla.com |
